Researchers gathered numerical data for this study to give a thorough and objective depiction of student activity, learning outcomes, and student reactions to reading comprehension. In this study, seventeen English-speaking students from a rural institution in the Indonesian region of South Sulawesi took part and were selected purposively. In an organized environment, the researchers used structured observation techniques to document particular actions or events methodically. A reading test and questionnaire were also used in this study. The reading test evaluated participants' characteristics, skills, or levels of knowledge. A questionnaire is a set of organized questions asked participants to gather their responses through the Likert scale. This study found that using synchronous online reading in a university located in a distant area has a positive effect on experiences and technology use, and it can alter how subjects are taught, how learning is carried out, and the difficulties that lecturers must overcome. Therefore, when choosing online learning that is regarded to help the learning process in the classroom, a lecturer might consider the study's findings. Future research may assess synchronous, asynchronous, and even hybrid learning in some distant area universities using large samples and a more diverse participant population
Nurhilaliah Nurhilaliah, Kisman Salija, Haruna Abubakar Haruna Copyright (c) 2023 Nurhilaliah, Kisman Salija, Haruna Abubakar Haruna https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ http://humanistudies.com/ijhi/article/view/179 Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0800 Exploring the fluency and comprehensibility of a role-play-based speaking in a tourism are university http://humanistudies.com/ijhi/article/view/180
This research aims to measure the performance of role-play-based speaking in a tourism area university. This research is projected to determine the student's fluency and comprehension level on role-play-based speaking in a tourism area university. This research also explores the implementation of role-play-based speaking in a tourism area university. The researchers employed exploratory research of the small sample size; twenty-nine students were selected purposively to participate in this study voluntarily. In this research, the instruments that researchers used were speaking tests and an interview guide. The speaking test is designed to measure English speaking proficiency. The speaking test focuses on students' fluency and comprehensibility levels through role-play-based speaking. The researchers used dialogue to measure the student's views on implementing role-play-based speaking; this data was obtained from the interview. The interview results were analyzed in three steps: data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusion. This research demonstrates the students' level of role-play-based speaking. The result showed that role play can improve students speaking performance in fluency and comprehensibility. This research highlights the positive impact of role-play-based speaking activities in an English Tourism class. The findings suggest that students engaging in role-play exercises demonstrate good fluency and comprehensibility in spoken English. Moreover, lecturers and students benefit from this approach by gaining confidence and enjoyment in speaking. Through this exploratory research, researchers generated preliminary hypotheses, which can be further tested using other research designs like descriptive or experimental research.
Yosabat Tinggi Tandipayuk, Fatimah Hidayahni Amin, Ghada Tosson Abd Al-Lateef, K. The researchers employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Ten EFL students conveniently participated in this study. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. This study showed that EFL students view plagiarism as an act of taking someone's idea, a bad habit, intentional and unintentional. EFL students' experience with plagiarism revealed that they committed plagiarism due to a lack of understanding and unfamiliarity with the plagiarism concept. Besides, the students reported being too lazy and less likely to read. EFL students expect to reduce plagiarism by being more active in reading and providing free workshop seminars, and lecturers must strictly apply the rules. Moreover, instilling self-motivation, receiving advice and feedback from the lecturer, understanding the definition of plagiarism, having the desire to read, enhancing personal awareness, doing Turnitin checker, using an application, and self-confidence were their expectations of reducing plagiarism practices.
Surahmat Agus Munandar, Sahril Nur, Andi Asrifan, Hussain Hameed Mayuuf, Andi Anto Patak Copyright (c) 2023 surahmatagus munandar, Sahril Nur, Andi Asrifan, Hussain Hameed Mayuuf, Andi Anto Patak https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ http://humanistudies.com/ijhi/article/view/184 Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0800 Investigating plagiarism practices of International Class students majoring in Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS) in writing scientific articles http://humanistudies.com/ijhi/article/view/187
Plagiarism is a common problem that exists in writing scientific articles. This research investigates views of plagiarism practices by students majoring in Mathematics and Natural Science in writing a scientific article. This research is qualitative descriptive, which applies thematic analysis. The research instruments were observation checklists, documents, and interview guides. The research subjects were eight students majoring in Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This study showed that students plagiarize due to missed information, keeping original ideas, and time constraints. Missed information about plagiarism, such as not understanding what constitutes plagiarism or how to cite sources properly, can also lead to unintentional plagiarism. Keeping the sense of original ideas without proper paraphrasing can lead to plagiarism. Time constraints can be a significant factor leading to plagiarism. When students or researchers are pressured to complete assignments, papers, or projects within a limited timeframe, they may resort to unethical practices like plagiarism to meet deadlines. This research found that students of Mathematics and Natural Sciences found difficulties regarding the time constraint in translation and properly citing and referencing sources. For further research, conducting a similar topic with a large-scale sample for presenting quantitative research designs on students' attitudes toward plagiarism practices in Mathematics and Natural Sciences is recommended. The upcoming research also could investigate the level of papers’ similarity and then follow up through training to avoid plagiarism
Puji Wahyu Setiawaty, Ali Said Almatari, Cris T. This research was conducted in one of the outstanding primary schools in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study is formative research—developmental research to improve design theory for designing teaching practices or processes. The development of the material was based on three important steps: preliminary study, development, and validation by experts in learning and teaching materials. Before developing the teaching materials, the syllabus should be made to support the development of the teaching materials. The teaching material was developed based on the teaching objectives with the topics or themes related to the student's daily life. After developing the material, the material was evaluated by two experts in learning and teaching materials. The evaluation was done by giving the prototype of the teaching material and validation sheet to the experts. The result of the study is the teaching material of basic English vocabulary based on the role-play technique for the pupils. It was found that this developed material was categorized as good based on the evaluation of the experts of the learning materials. The basic English vocabulary teaching materials, lesson plans, and teaching materials were designed based on the needs of the students. It was discovered after analyzing the data. It is intended that because the contents of the materials apply to the student's everyday lives, they can read and comprehend them. Role-playing techniques are also used in the creation of instructional materials. For the pupils, this technique is engaging and enjoyable. However, the teaching material still needs to be developed regarding the content, language use, and appearance.
Ahmad Talib, Abdullah Abdullah, Mayong Maman Copyright (c) 2023 Ahmad Talib, Abdullah Abdullah, Mayong Maman https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ http://humanistudies.com/ijhi/article/view/189 Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0800
